Nuclear Emergency Details

A low-level emergency was declared wednesday 22nd, at the Byron Nuclear Generating Station near Rockford after smoke caused by an electrical problem filled a tunnel leading to a nuclear reactor of the plant, Exelon officials said.

An "unusual event," the lowest of four Nuclear Regulatory Commission emergency classifications, was declared at 8:54 a.m. It ended at 11:09 a.m.

It started when smoke filled a tunnel that carries a pipe that runs from a backup cooling-water supply tank to the reactor, Exelon Nuclear spokesman Craig Nesbit said. Workers turned off electricity to the room, and the smoke ceased, he said.

Electrical equipment—a small pump, small heater or circuit breaker—in the room was "sparking and smoking," Nesbit said.

No radiation was released, no one was injured and no safety-related equipment was damaged, he said. Plant operations continued normally.

Three Planes Avoid Runway Crash

Three Planes Avoid Runway Crash in L.A.

LOS ANGELES - a controller at Los Angeles International Airport mistakenly cleared three planes for the same runway

Southwest Airlines jet cleared to land

Departing Skywest turboprop directed to taxi on the same runway

Air Canada jet told - it could cross the same runway on its way to the terminals

The Skywest pilot saw the incoming Southwest jet and stopped short of the runway. The jet roared past about 275 feet away and 50 feet above the smaller plane. It landed without incident and never got closer than about 5,600 feet to the Air Canada jet, Dorr said.

The FAA has not determined why the controller put the planes so close together or switched the Southwest jet to a different runway as it came in to land.

The Los Angeles International Airport has had one of the worst runway safety violation records in the nation in recent years. The city's airport agency is spending $328 million to give planes on the ground more room to maneuver.

It was pretty close, said Les Dorr, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, said. "We'll be looking to find out what all happened, and how we can prevent it in the future.

Emergency declared at nuclear power plant

Do you feel me now With a taste of your lips I’m on a ride You’re toxic - Britney Spears

All the indications are that it was an instrumentation problem" that did not threaten public health, said David Lochbaum, director of nuclear safety for the Union of Concerned Scientists, which advocates safety in the nuclear industry.

State and federal regulators said no radioactivity was released during the emergency. And the reactor, one of two at the site, remained stable, they said.

After ordering an investigation of a rare emergency Monday at Exelon's LaSalle County nuclear plant, federal regulators said they would inspect all Illinois nuclear power plants because of the company's recent disclosures about radioactive leaks.

Exelon Nuclear declared the first "site-area emergency" in the nation since 1991 at LaSalle County Generating Station, about 75 miles southwest of Chicago.

Thursday night snow looked like thick salt particles and flying like sand in the desert. very windy conditions. Friday evening Temperature drops so much - my tropicana juice freezes like a brick in the balcony. The tangerines (oranges) became grenades. I went in and got some juice from refregerator and came back to balcony and guess, the juice felt hot! it became okay in few seconds. Then i micro-ed the Cat Fish. No form of life was visible. squirrels, geese, doves, sparrows! all are hiding. This is the coldest weather i ever experienced.

Even now at 9 AM Saturday morning it is -4 degree F. wind chill makes it look like -24 F.Windchill: -24°, Wind: NW 14 mph, Dewpoint: -18°, Humidity: 51%, Visibility: 10.0 miles, Barometer: 30.80 in.The temperatures will not stay so low but we will see some snow Thursday.

Happy Weekend!!

Media didn't had much to do this week! Except creating more Cheney Jokes! Few examples..

Although it is beautiful here in California the weather back east has been atrocious. There was so much snow in Washington, D.C. Dick Cheney accidentally shot a fat guy thinking it was a polar bear.
I guess the guy is going to be ok. When the ambulance got there, out of force of habit they put Cheney on the stretcher. No, the other guy!
President Bush said today he is standing by the vice president. Way behind him.
I’m not sure I buy Cheney’s excuse. Did you hear why it happened? It started years ago when he received a heart transplant from a convicted killer. That lead to…
Cheney’s defense is that he was aiming at a quail when he shot the guy. Which means that Cheney now has the worst aim of anyone in the white house since Bill Clinton.
Hillary Clinton blasted the vice president today for failing to disclose all the facts. She wants Dick Cheney to give exact details. You know like, "How do you shoot someone and make it look like an accident?”
Actually the interview did get off to a bad start when Brit Hume said, "Mr. Vice President, I have some questions.” And Cheney said, "Okay, shoot.”
Of course, 14th was Valentine's Day ... that is if you're a woman. If you're a guy, it was Tuesday. Yesterday Dick Cheney gave an interview with Fox News. I don’t want to say that Fox News was lenient but their first question was, "Who do you like on ‘American Idol’?"
Actually the interview did get off to a bad start when Brit Hume said, "Mr. Vice President, I have some questions.” And Cheney said, "Okay, shoot.”
In fact, do you know what Cheney said to his aides after he shot the guy? "Save his heart! Grab his heart!”

Mike Tyson to replace Chenny!

I cooked potato and brocolli last night. Micro-ed the potatoes first coz' thet needed more cooking, and then cooked them together. Turned out to be a good dinner.

A fundamental knowledge of golf is generally accepted as required knowledge in the business world. In the Lone Star State, though, it’s wise to know the in’s and out’s of a Remington as well as a Big Bertha.
Contracts are negotiated and mergers contemplated in the gleaming skyscrapers of Houston and Dallas, but the handshake often comes hundreds of miles away in the country, devoid of anything but a deer blind.
It can be more important than an MBA from the right school. In Texas, the hunting trip is the deal-closing equivalent of a few hours on the fairway.
It was at such occasion that Vice President Dick Cheney, a guest at the 50,000-acre Armstrong ranch, when he accidentally shot Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old hunting companion while on a weekend quail hunt. Whittington, an Austin attorney, was recovering Monday and described in "very stable" condition.
THE deadly strain of H5N1 bird flu has been detected in four European countries, carried by swans driven south by freezing weather in northern Europe. Yesterday Slovenia joined Italy, Greece and Bulgaria in reporting cases of the infection among swans. None of the four has seen cases among domesticated birds or human beings. ..across the atlantic the chicken is good to eat! and is most likely to be on menu tonight!!
