Slippery Snow

Tribune staff reportersPublished January 21, 2006, 2:06 PM CST
January's first snowstorm dumped up to a foot of snow in some suburbs. One traffic death was linked to the storm, and drivers were beset by numerous spinouts and other accidents.Elgin saw 12 inches of snow, while Barrington, Mundelein, Grayslake and Wauconda all had 11 inches of snow or more, according to the National Weather Service. The pace never let up overnight, especially in far northern and northwestern suburbs where the greatest snowfall was recorded, police said."They were everywhere. Take your pick," said a dispatcher for the Lake County Sheriff's police.Chicago was hit with less than 5 inches, which helped things return to normal at O'Hare International Airport Saturday morning, said a spokeswoman for the Chicago Department of Aviation.
....Today was a sunny day and snow a bit slippery!

Pork noodles cure Jet Lag

i reached in apartment tired after saturday night...combination of 1) lack of sleep and 2) jet lag ..fell with a thud into the quilt with shoes left out. wake up hungry at 6:30 AM. Ate bread butter and left over pork flavored Top Ramen noodles. follwed later by a large glass of milk. Had a shower ..walk on a cold morning when the lakes around apartment were frozen ..and then more sleep for an hour. had another king size glass of milk with Hershey choclate syrup. its sunday..marinated the chicken breasts and drumsticks and pork stew. will cook chicken in the evening. By The Way vegetables here taste terreble So much that the only time you don't cry is - when you are cutting onions.
Went to gurdwara at 12:30 pm with some punjabi and a Telgu friend. There were some gora and spanish too. Felt great eating chick peas and dal, and salad in langar. and Gaffe what a change from eating frozen rotis. felt good only thing different from a punjabi gurudwara is that, in Arlington Heights they serve tissue paper before deg and langar. They observed the annivarsery for 40 Mukte and ...some faces did blushed when Bhai ji prayed for the youth who are giving bedawa to sikhi.

Devon Street

I had a head-bath at 7 am and stood on the balcony. the droplets tend to freeze before they reached the ground. A big sqirrel wondered what they were and came to check them out. Not useful for her to build the nest. She collected some more dry maple leaves under the 'bare trunk' trees and went under a tin cover on a adjoining balcony .

Then came the morning it was a sunny morning and some heat in the sunshine as well. I left the leather jacket in apartment before going to work.

In the evening i went to Devon street (india pakistan street) and first time saw a beggar in US. A mexican or Spanish. This is 45 minutes drive from my apartment. On the way i passed in front of O'Hare Int Airport. Air plains zoom over the skies like mosquites in monsoons nights back in india. These are the busiet skies i have ever seen. By then temp had dropped to 27 F or ~ -2 degree C.

White Chicago

I was looking to go on jogging and rain started. 9:30 am and snow accompanied the rain and
snow was greeting me on way to office. 'Welcome to Chicago' but chicago snow misses the
romance of Rochester NY snowfall.

AIR INDIA 127

I arrived here at OHare on 12th. Air India it had to be late. The flight AI 127 was not allowed to fly from Frankfurt Main, as its public broadcast system was not working. They announed in lounge after every 40 minutes or so..1) Engineers are working on it 2) Had found the faulty part and waiting for replacement to arrive 3) The replacement did not work and when ladies with small kids started shouting at them they said its fixed. The flight took off at 6:30 pm local time instead of 2:30 pm. They served a cheese burger and a coke. $10 for 4 hours. No body from Air India came to give an update. They treaded passengers if they were small kids. wait the worst was to come...Before it landed at OHare - just before entering airport i made out from the wild banks that something was wrong. Few metres from touchdown it took a wild bank. and after ~7 seconds came a fluttering sound from right wing. Has the plane halted?? yes!?! Why? What Next? The East German guy sitting next to me (one seat gap) looking at me with his lips like a fish face position. I looked at him trying to find what to do next. Thank got it did not explode. I felt so happy to be alive. When i came out of OHare, Chicago at 9PM local time (8:30 IST) it was like 10 degree C. jes like a summer evening.
